A Small Car That Punches Above Its Service Complexity
The Dolphin is BYD’s entry point in most export markets — a small electric hatch on the e-Platform 3.0 architecture, priced to compete with conventional city cars and sold in volume across South-East Asia, Australia and Europe. Do not let the size mislead you: under the skin it uses the same integrated drive assembly and Blade battery family as the larger models, so the service logic is largely the same. BYD Dolphin service manual availability follows the same pattern as the rest of the range: owner-level documentation is free, workshop-level data is dealer-gated. In practice, most BYD Dolphin repair work is routine — brakes, cooling, auxiliary battery, charge port — and the real difficulty is access rather than method.

Note the CLTC figure: it is a Chinese test cycle and reads optimistic against WLTP. Quote realistic range to customers accordingly.
How the Dolphin Behaves in the Workshop
The compact body means access is tighter than on the SUV models, and the thermal system is packaged more densely. Plan for longer removal times on anything behind the front bumper or under the floor. The high-voltage architecture itself is conventional for the platform — 400 V class, integrated drive unit, cell-to-pack battery — so the safety discipline is identical to the larger cars.
Inspection Points and Known Faults
- 12V auxiliary battery, every time. This is the single most common source of misleading faults on the model — charging errors, communication loss and driver-assistance warnings all trace back to it more often than workshops expect.
- Battery cooling circuit. Coolant condition, level and pump operation should be checked as part of routine service on older cars. A cooling fault often presents as a charging-rate complaint rather than an obvious code.
- Charge port locking. Intermittent AC charging is frequently the actuator or latch, not the charging hardware.
- Underbody protection. Low ground clearance plus a floor-mounted pack makes underbody damage an inspection priority on cars used on poor roads — which covers most export markets.
- Brake underuse. Strong regeneration means the friction brakes see little work. Check for seized calipers and glazed pads on low-mileage city cars.
- Cab bus integrity. Can bus faults on these cars are usually wiring or terminal issues rather than module failure — verify before replacing.

Common Fault Codes (BYD Dolphin DTC)
Below are the codes most frequently seen on this model, with the checking order that avoids unnecessary parts. Full BYD Dolphin DTC routines are not available through generic scan tools.
| Code | Meaning | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| P0A1C | Battery pack cooling system fault | Coolant level and condition, pump operation, radiator airflow and blockage, sensor plausibility |
| P0D2F | Charging over-current | Supply-side quality, charge cable and inlet condition, port temperature, then charging hardware |
| U0111 | Lost communication with the battery management system | 12V supply and ground to the module, connector seating, then bus continuity |
| P0C4A | Motor control module over-temperature | Coolant flow through the drive unit circuit, pump and thermostat operation, actual versus expected temperature |
When Remote Diagnosis Makes Sense
On a Dolphin, the jobs that stall in an independent workshop are almost always access problems: a BMS or charging code that will not clear, a module that needs a relearn after replacement, or a fault that only appears under specific charging conditions. Sending the fault data and VIN to someone who works with BYD diagnostic access daily is usually faster than buying tooling for a single job.
