Tesla flags the Model Y cabin filter by health score, not by mileage. When the score drops, or the customer reports odour, fogging or weak airflow, the fix is a two-filter swap inside the HEPA housing plus a health-score reset in Service Mode. The physical work is short; the reset step is the one technicians routinely skip, and skipping it leaves a stale maintenance entry on the vehicle.

Before you start
- Work on a cool vehicle. The HEPA housing sits in the cowl area and the plastic becomes brittle when hot.
- Have both filter elements on hand. The activated carbon element and the HEPA element are separate parts and are replaced together.
- Inspect the rubber gasket before ordering. It is reusable only if it comes out without tearing, and it is the usual cause of a repeat noise complaint.
- Confirm the vehicle software version. Vehicles on 2024.14 and later add a cabin filter health score reset path that earlier builds do not have.
Removal
- Remove the HEPA cabin filter assembly from the vehicle.
- Remove the HEPA cabin filter cover.
- Withdraw the activated carbon filter element from the HEPA housing.
- Withdraw the HEPA filter element from the housing.
Technician tip: the rubber gasket seats into a groove in the housing and grips harder than it looks. Use a plastic trim tool to lift it out. Metal tools score the housing lip and create a leak path that will whistle at speed.
Installation
Installation follows removal in reverse, with one deliberate difference: the housing lip needs to be eased outward slightly to widen the opening so the new element seats without folding. A folded HEPA pleat passes air around the media instead of through it, which shows up later as the same fogging complaint you were called to fix.
- Seat the new HEPA element fully into the housing groove.
- Seat the new activated carbon element on top of it.
- Ease the housing edge outward, then press the elements home.
- Refit the HEPA cabin filter cover.
- Refit the HEPA cabin filter assembly.
Resetting the cabin filter health score
This is the step that separates a complete job from a comeback. The vehicle tracks filter condition independently of the physical element, so a new filter with an old score will still trigger the same reminder.
- Enable Maintenance Mode on the touchscreen.
- Go to Controls (vehicle icon) > Service > Maintenance.
- Record the filter maintenance details.
- Reset the cabin filter health score.
Tesla updated this reset method on 14 July 2026, and the 2024.14+ software branch introduced the in-menu health score reset. On older builds the equivalent action is reached through the service menu rather than the Maintenance page, so check the software version before you tell the customer the job is closed.
Common mistakes that cause a comeback
- Reusing a stretched gasket. It will not seal, and the customer hears it as wind noise or smells it as outside odour.
- Skipping the health score reset. The reminder returns within days.
- Forcing the pleats. A crushed HEPA element loses its filtration efficiency and its airflow at the same time.
- Working on a hot cowl. Clips snap, and the housing lip distorts.
- Replacing only the HEPA element. The activated carbon element handles odour; leaving a spent one in place means the smell complaint continues.
